It was a journey to Tibet in 1987 that led me to begin photographing identity as a theme.
This was before the Qinghai–Tibet Railway (青蔵鉄道)opened — Barkhor Square, still saturated with dust and incense, was exactly as it had always been.
Pilgrims arriving by prostration from distant lands, nomads, monks playing sacred Buddhist music, travelers, street vendors ...
The colors and light I felt there, the feelings that defied words. The world I saw through a 300mm telephoto lens.
I want to preserve these memories and records, while thinking about how to express them going forward.
